World Cup Pool B Winner Tonga

Rugby league - World Cup - 11 Nov 10:00

Pool B consists of New Zealand (1.62 favourites), Tonga (3.75), Samoa (7.00) & Scotland (67.00). Scotland will be the whipping boys so Tonga and New Zealand should both pick up 2 points there, Samoa have some good individuals but are nothing special and that should be another 2 points for Tonga and New Zealand too. It should play out that way which means the winner of pool B will be decided by the outcome of the Tonga v New Zealand game, which is actually the final Pool B fixture.

When the two sides meet I think it will be a close game and close in the market, yet by taking this market we effectively get odds of 3.75 for Tonga to beat New Zealand, obviously giving us big value. The average odds are just 3.25 anyway and this is definitely a smart play.

A few weeks ago when the squads were getting announced something strange happened, 8 players due to be picked for New Zealand and 1 for Australia all decided to take up their dual nationality option and switch to Tonga. This all happened at once, I've heard of the odd player switching but 9 all at once is mad. Clearly there was communication between these players & the coaching staff, it was obviously a planned move and it could prove to be a shrewd move.

Andrew Fifita would have been first choice prop for World Cup red hot favourites Australia so that was a huge switch. Jason Taumalolo was probably the best prop in the world last season and he's switched from New Zealand where he would have been first choice. Manu Ma'u, David Fusitu'a, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Tui Lolohea, Solomone Kata, Konrad Hurrell and Manu Vatuvei have swapped allegiance too, adding to what was already a strong Tonga squad.

Personally I think Tonga are now the dark horses in this competition, they have some real class about them now. Also consider those 9 players have put a lot on the line, moving from nations that were first and second favourite for the World Cup to a seemingly smaller nation class wise, they will go all out to justify their decision.

Where Tonga now look a force New Zealand are severely weakened by the loss of 8 of players, helping Tonga when the two sides meet. Again those 8 players will go all out against their former nation when these sides meet.

Providing Tonga and New Zealand beat the other two nations as expected then the final Pool B game between the two sides will decide this market. It should be a close game and close in the market. Odds of 3.75 now look really good so I'm going double stakes.
