Man Of Steel Sam Tomkins

Rugby league - Super League - 01 Feb 19:45

From 2010-2014 Sam Tomkins was right up there as one of the best full-backs on the planet, in fact he was probably the best for some of that time. In 2012 he then deservedly won the Man Of Steel award.

In 2015,16 & 17 he's struggled with injuries and in those seasons has played just 16, 15 & 15 games. He did show glimpses of his very best in spells last season so it's fair to say he's still got it. He's fit and ready to start 2018 so he could be back to his very best and for that reason he looks way overpriced.

When at his best he's a try scoring machine, scoring 21, 33, 36 & 33 tries from 2010-2013, it's that kind of thing that won him the Man Of Steel award in 2012.

This season he's also set to be on kicking duty and that can only aid his chances, it will give him a more rounded game. Luke Gale won it last season with an all round game and Sam Tomkins has the ability to outscore him in every department.

He might yet even move to the half-back position next to George Williams this season, he could just swap between half-back & full-back all season. Half-back would probably help his chances more for this, but he's priced up as a straight up full-back.

He will be fired up and ready to prove point this season too. He's lost his place in the England squad when he used to be the first name on the team sheet and he missed the recent World Cup, he will want to regain his place for sure. Wigan will be keen to regain to title too and should go close to doing so.

It's fellow Super League players who cast the votes and I feel Sam Tomkins has the all round game to catch the eye of his fellow professionals. He's with a side likely to go all the way, he can score tries, make tries, he's got a bit of x-factor and this season will be on kicking/drop goal duty too.

We obviously need him to stay injury free but I guess that's the case with every player in this market, we also need him to be back to his very best but a full pre-season would suggest he's got to be close to that level again.

No way he's a 33/1 shot, the average odds of 20/1 seem about right. Good value and a strong contender. Hopefully compensation awaits for last seasons selection finishing runner up at these odds!
