Grand Final Winner Wigan

Rugby league - Super League - 01 Feb 19:45

I'm putting a number of eggs in one basket this season as I'm predicting a big season for the Wigan Warriors, I see them winning a number of team and individual awards so will be backing them in a number of markets.

Wigan Warriors have been the most consistent Super League sides in recent times, they've won 3 of the last 8 Grand Finals and been runners up a further 2 times. They were last Grand Final winners in 2016. The recent history shows Wigan are right up there with the best and having made the Grand Final for 6 of the last 8 years you know you will get a run for your money.

Last season they were favourites to retain their title but unfortunately they were hit with some terrible luck regarding injuries. Most of their first choice starting 17 were out with injury at some point, some were mid to long term and they had long spells with several of the first choice 17 out at any one time.

Things were so bad I think they called up a total of 10 youth academy players throughout they season, that's pretty much unheard of. Towards they end of the season the whole back line was made up of youth players.

Naturally they struggled to find consistency last season so it's to their credit that they finished the season in 7th place and only 3 points off making the play-offs. Given the injury worries they should probably have been in the bottom 4 and fighting for Super League survival.

It looks like they start this season with a fully fit squad, everyone has been involved in pre-season training and the big warm up game against Leigh. The head coach said said the squad are hungry to put things right this year so expect a huge response.

In terms of individuals they have of the best players in the league, as a team unit they are the best when on song. No doubt they have the ability to make up for last year and regain the title.

It's also worth noting that the reigning champions Leeds have lost two irreplaceable players in Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow whilst runners up Castleford make both personal and positional changes. It's set to be an open season and the door is open for Wigan.
