Dewsbury v Sheffield

Rugby league - Championship - 02 Feb 19:45

I'm surprised to see Dewsbury as slight underdogs here as I make them slight favourites myself. Odds of 2.10 represent good value and I'm keen to take advantage with double stakes.

It's fair to say Dewsbury were shocking at the start of last season, losing their first 8 games which saw them bottom of the league, that also lead to the sacking of their head coach.

Once current head coach Neil Kelly took over he swiftly turned things around, steering them well clear of relegation and winning 8 of their final 15 games. They even made the semi-finals of the Championship shield, after 8 games that would have been completely out of the question.

The turn around in form was impressive and one of the keys to success was home form, almost turning this place into a fortress. They won 5 of 7 at home after Neill Kelly took over.

Their home ground has a poor surface that can turn into a bog, a clear advantage for them, tonight could be the same.

Dewsbury actually won 2 of the 3 games against Sheffield last season, here at home they won the only meeting 28-18.

Not that pre-season friendlies mean a great deal but it's worth noting that this pre-season Dewsbury beat Bradford 28-0 at home whilst Sheffield lost 12-6 to Bradford.

Dewsbury have also made some big signings this pre-season and they look a lot stronger that the side that beat Sheffield 28-18 here last season.

They've signed the likes of Jordan Crowther (Wakefield - Super League), Billy Hayes (Huddersfield - Super League), Jared Simpson (Huddersfield - Super league), Harry Woollard (Huddersfield - Super League), Martyn Reilly (Halifax - Championship), Rob Worrincy (Halifax - Championship) & Kyle Trout (Sheffield - Championship).

Home form is key here and for me Dewsbury beating Sheffield 28-18 here last season speaks volumes. Pre-season form against Bradford possibly suggests Dewsbury have improved whilst Sheffield maybe haven't. The new signings are a bonus.

I'm sure you can see why I make Dewsbury favourites at their tricky home ground in the opening game of the Championship.
