F1 Australian GP Hamilton Pole Position

Other sports - F1 2016 Australian GP - 19 Mar 06:00

Finally the bookmakers have begun pricing up this weekends season opener in Australia and there are a few enticing bets to get on and here is the first

This is for Lewis Hamilton to be on pole position this weekend at odds of EVS (2.00)

Hamilton has raced at the Australian GP 9 times in his career and has been on pole 4 times - in 2008, 2012 and in both of the last 2 years 2014 & 2015

The winning margin in qualifying over the last 2 years as been dominating too with a gap in 2015 of 0.594 to Rosberg

In 2014, Hamilton won qualifying by 0.317 to Ricciardo in the Red Bull and a gap of 0.364 to Rosberg who was in 3rd

Hamilton has more poles than any other current F1 driver with 49 poles from 167 races

Vettel is close behind on 46 (from 158 starts) and then much further back are Rosberg and Alonso on 22 each. Raikkonen and Massa also have 16 each with no other current driver in double figures

Its rare to see Hamilton to be anywhere near EVS in this market so i have to ask why and there are a few reasons the bookmakers have priced him up as such

Firstly, new rules for 2016 have been introduced for qualifying which sees the slowest car being eliminated every 90 seconds until the final two cars have a 90 second shootout

This brings an element or risk, any mistakes are more easily punished as less recovery time but Mercedes will have had more time than most to have planned their way through these new rules

Mercedes have been concentrating on such minute details with their car this winter and it goes to show that no stone is left unturned and the same goes for this new qualifying format in my view

Another reason for the odds is perhaps the times from testing, Mercedes never set a standout lap during testing but they also never put the softest tyre compound on and ran long runs for the majority of testing

Mercedes actually completed 1,329 laps across 8 days of testing - that's just over 20 race distances in 8 days so we can see where their priorities were and it wasn't qualifying times

So take best odds of 2.00 with Bet365 for Lewis Hamilton to be on pole in the Australian GP this weekend
