Old Rowley Cup on Friday at Newmarket and I am really excited at the prospect of seeing FIRST NATION back on a sound surface. I have to post now given these odds won't last.

I put this horse up a couple of starts ago at Ascot thinking he was really well in off 96 and whilst running credibly into fifth it was clear the soft ground was really detrimental to his chances of winning.

Today he runs off 95 and with the forecast suggesting no heavy showers on the way (good ground currently), I'm giving him another chance to prove my theory right.

This horse has been pretty consistent finishing in the top 5 in 7 of his last 8 runs. He usually gives his running which I like to see.

Looking through his form you will see why I think he could have a few pounds in hand here.

Let's look at his 4th at Glorious Goodwood which again came on unfavorable soft ground. He ran a decent race but the form of that race has worked out amazingly. The winner Londinium and runner up On To Victory are subsequently 10lbs and 6lbs higher in the weights.

3 lengths behind First Nation in 5th was our good friend Secret Advisor who won the Melrose on his next start and is now rated 100. First Nation was racing off level weights with his stable companion that day yet is rated 5lbs below him going into this.

First Nation also split seemingly well handicapped horses at Sandown earlier in the season. The winner subsequently finished second at listed level and is now rated 11lbs higher (worth noting First Nation was giving the winner 8lbs) while the third horse is now rated 100, a full stone higher.

First Nation comes into this on the back of a nice prep over an inadequate 10 furlong distance at this track. To his credit he kept on well into second but was no match for the winner who was well in running off a penalty.

He's up to his favored 12 furlongs here and at least proved he can handle the track which is a big plus given many struggle around Newmarket.

Interestingly James Doyle was booked on Monday for the ride, very interesting given Godolphin currently have two horses priced shorter in the betting for this race. I wonder if Doyle is sensing another big handicap win for the Boys In Blue.

This horse is a full half brother to St Leger winner Mastery and I just think there is plenty of juice in that handicap mark of 95.

There are one or two other potential lurkers include Crowned Eagle who has been hammered in the antepost market (not sure if it's genuine or if it's just because ATRs Gary Nutting has put him up).

For that reason I'll put him up each way (really tempted to go for the win but I do see a danger or two which wasn't the case when I went big on Secret Advisor).

This horse has been a model of consistency. 95 is an attractive mark, and I'll be very disappointed if he isn't in the frame at the very least.

I think 16/1 is a fantastic price. He will be shorter on the day. Just remember this race is on Friday (might have to go to antepost to place bet).
