Ladbrokes Gold Cup American

Horse racing - Ladbrokes Gold Cup - 02 Dec 15:10

On to December and the next big race is the Ladbrokes Gold Cup, better known as the Hennessy Gold Cup. The horse I'm very keen on is American, he's got some serious potential for this season and beyond. The trainer, Harry Fry, gave a recent interview and what he said made me reach for the notebook, he said "“He couldn't be any more impressive last season in his novice chases going unbeaten throughout the season, it’s just a shame he’s such a delicate horse and he needs it as soft as possible. Providing it's soft, he looks to have a great profile for the Ladbrokes Gold Cup at Newbury where he will start the season. Off that mark I would be disappointed if he wasn't to go close and we will be using that as a guide to see if we stay down the handicap route or take a step up into the top staying chases”.

The ground is the big concern so let's try and clear that one up first. You can't predict the weather but this is England after all so by December 2nd you would expect there to have been a fair bit of rain about and it should mean soft ground at Newbury. The ground for the last 5 renewals of the was good to soft, good, soft, soft, good to soft. Not that great with only a couple of proper soft ground renewals recently but overall I'd say soft ground is much more likely that good. I'm hopeful the ground will be soft enough for American to take his chance. Like the trainer said American was 4 from 4 last season, his first season over the bigger obstacles. To say he enjoyed jumper the bigger obstacles is an understatement, he just seemed to love his job and was very impressive in each race. To me he had the look a a proper graded animal so no surprise to see the trainer mention a step up into the "top staying races" for this lad if he goes well here. He's definitely got a big future and might turn out to be a class above his rivals in this handicap contests. Obviously ground has to be a concern but at 16/1 I'm more than happy to take a punt, knowing he will be a key player and will likely go off much shorter. Be aware that you lose your money if he doesn't show up.
