Grand Sefton Rathlin Rose - Each Way

Horse racing - Aintree - 09 Dec 15:10

I always like to consider horses trained by David Pipe when it comes to these races over the Grand National Fences. The three big races contested over the Grand National fences are the Grand National, the Becher Chase and this Grand Sefton. David Pipe has won all 3, the Grand National in 2008, this Grand Sefton in 2014 & the Becher last season.

In recent years there's only 4 locations in Britain and Ireland which have Grand National schooling fences, one of them is actually at David Pipe's yard. Obviously this is a huge advantage as they can make maximum use of them. Combined with the fact that this yard already target these races & have a good record over them and you can see why horses from this yard on one's to watch out for.

Rathlin Rose is a horse that stays further than this 21 furlong trip, all 5 career wins coming over 24 or 25 furlongs. For me this is an advantage as it's a testing course distance, the big Grand National fences take a lot of the horses and the ground should be soft too. This is often won by a horse that stays a longer trip anyway and in the ground Rathlin Rose should definitely be finishing strong.

He's a horse with plenty of ability. Last season he did the same double that coincidently my other selection just posted, Jennys Surprise, did the previous season. He won the Royal Artillery Gold Cup by 4 lengths, beating a horse who'd previously finished 6th in a Grand National. He then won the Royal Military Gold Cup by 12 lengths. Very impressive both times.

He's 4lb higher in the weights than for those two wins but considering he won by 4 & 12 lengths he could actually be well handicapped still. I'm expecting improvement over these national fences anyway. He carries a nice low weight of 10-7 and could storm home. A worthy each way bet at 25/1. 4 places at 1/4 odds.
