DP World Tour Championship First Round Leader Ian Poulter ew

Golf - DP World Tour Championship - 16 Nov 03:40

A 3 way attack on the FRL market this week. Normally I go with bombers and on a golf course measuring 7,700 yards with wide fairways you'd assume it would suit them down to the ground. But going back through the years and looking at the 1st Round scores that hasn't been the case.

The likes of Marcus Fraser, Luke Donald, Alejandro Canizares and Poulter himself have all topped the leaderboard after Day 1 here at the Earth course.

My take on it is that it's a 2nd shot golf course, so no matter how far you bomb it down there you've still got to be good with your approach play and generally that's often where the power hitters come undone. Also conditions are generally quite firm and fast in the desert so the shorter hitters can get extra distance from their shots.

Anyhow I just wanted to explain why I've gone from a shortlist of bombers to 3 players who don't average over 300 yards off the tee.

First up Poulter. This is a rare occasion where a tour pro gets to tee off 1st and play a full 18 holes with no one in front of them. I've talked about this before and called it the "Hoff effect" after Hoffman took full advantage at Augusta one year. It's ideal for momentum, you get round much quicker and there is far less media or crowd to get in your face and put you off.

Add to the fact Poulter has shot 66 on this golf course 5 times before it looks a decent play. He's twice been the runner up in this event and arrives here in really good form.

Poulter has finished in the Top 25 in his last 6 European Tour events and has made a habit of starting tournaments quickly. He shot 66 in Round 1 in Turkey and the British Masters. He also shot 67s to begin the Scottish Open and the Open Championship. Earlier this season he shot a 1st Round 67 in the Dubai Desert Classic and was T4 after Day 1.

40/1 isn't massive but with the advantage of teeing off first (wind also forecast to pick up in the afternoon) I think Poulter is a very good bet. I should also mention I'm aware some have talked about how it's cooler in the mornings in Dubai and the ball doesn't travel so far. Well that maybe so but 22 degrees is hardly cold now is it.
