Key Points

  • When APOEL landed Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Zenit St. Petersburg, the champions of Portugal, Ukraine and Russia, not many would have expected them to progress to this stage.
Fewer still, if any, would have thought they would go and win their group, but here we are. The Cypriot club will now face Lyon, who aren't quite as good as they used to be.
Lyon host APOEL at a very bad time indeed, having played 5 games in 2 weeks. They might be home but they are fresh off a humiliating 2-1 loss right here to Caen, and that 8th league loss of the season leaves them 11 points behind PSG.
I don't think they're going to be in the right frame of mind and so at short prices are not a reliable bet.
Lyon hadn't exactly shone in the group stages en route to this match either. In 3 grou home games they beat only Dynamo Zagreb, a side that lost all 6 of their games, home and away.
Real Madrid came here and won 2-0, and Ajax grabbed a 0-0 draw. Lyon didn't even muster a goal, which is far from encouraging when they are now meant to face a group winner that dealt with the champions of 3 countries, playing away in bad conditions too. APOEL are a very live dog.
Lyon should not really even be here, such was their form. They qualified after beaten Zagreb 7-1 and needed all those goals to get by on goal difference.
It will be very difficult to score even once against the Cypriots, who will no doubt want to take this back to theirs to finish off the French.
Lyon have now won just 1 of their last 5 games in all competitions while APOEL have been beaten just 3 times in 20 games back in their own league, where they are just 1 point off the lead.
APOEL managed to avoid defeat in all 3 of their group away games, and I fancy them to do the same here.
You could do worse than having a cheeky punt on the visitors to nick the win, but I'm going with the draw.
