Belgium -2.5 v Poland

Darts - World Cup of Darts - 02 Jun 21:00

If ever there was a team for a nation that was seemingly born to play this event, it is the Huybrechts brothers for Belgium. Their record in this event is nothing short of outstanding, all things considered. A semi final last year followed a final in 2013 and a Quarter Final in 2014. They play and feed off one another, and, whilst Kim is by far the better of the two, Ronny raises his game every year for this event. They are favourites for this match and rightly so.

What is of interest to myself is that, in these kind of matches, where they are heavy favourites, they have a very good record of sealing victory in quick fashion. 5-0 and 5-1 scorelines in this round in the last two years demonstrate this. Whilst these opponents were the Phillipines and India, Poland are unfortunately at a not much higher level.

Looking at the form of the two Huybrechts', he has played reasonably well so far. Following a disappointing World Championship, he reached the Semi Finals of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, defeating Gary Anderson along the way, a last 16 at the UK Open, and a Quarter Final appearence at the Masters. All in all, a not bad year so far.

Ronny has undoubtedly struggled so far this year, but he did the same last year, and he still produced consistent displays at this event. He is becoming very much a one tournament player but, certainly, he is worth his weight in gold at this event and I feel he will be able to raise his level for this event once again.

In terms of their opponents, Poland do not represent much to fear here. One victory in the World Cup of Darts from 3 attempts is nowhere near the form of Belgium. In addition, they have two non-professional players, one of which was part of a team who lost 5-0 here last year. Of these two, Krzysztof Ratajski and Mariusz Paul, Ratajski has the best form, but even that is not particularly impressive. A journeyman campaigner on the BDO tour, he has never gotten beyond the last 32 of any top ranking event. All told, neither of have these two are closely matched in ability to even Ronny, let alone Kim Huybrechts.

Belgium therefore should be expected to get a comfortable victory here and I feel that they can continue their trend of comfortable victories in the first round of this event here against a poor Poland side. I do not think it is a lot to consider them winning by 5-0, 5-1 or 5-2 and I feel that Belgium are more than capable of getting this kind of result here.
