Winner w/o Van Gerwen Thornton

Darts - PDC World Championship - 21 Dec 19:00

Much like my other tip, the meat on this one is based in opposing Phil Taylor to make a deep run into the tournament.

Thornton is the other major seed waiting in Taylor's quarter. In order to reach the final, where he would almost certainly meet MVG and thus make this tip a winner, Thornton is seeded to have to get past Norris, Murnan, Jenkins/Webster, Taylor/Klaasen and finally Anderson/Wade.

It's my belief that Taylor could easily be out by that QF stage, and, even if not, his confidence is a mere shadow of what it once was. If Thornton should meet Klaasen, the Dutchman could easily fall victim to the curse of the man beating Taylor going out in the next round, as has happened so frequently due to the "after the Lord Mayor's Show" effect that we've seen so often.

The reason I'm opposing Taylor? He gave a frankly bizarre interview after his first round win over Ono. He looked either exhausted, confused or (a rogue might suggest), under the influence. He rambled, fairly aggressively, and dismissed his own chances of victory, gesturing at cardboard cutouts of Anderson and van Gerwen, saying "one of these two are gonna be world champion". Taylor went on to say "tonight was mediocre" and "it was rubbish". He revealed that his new darts were on his mind, and that he had changed them just ONE DAY before his first round match. Among his rambling, Taylor said "I've not slept for 3 or 4 days" and went on to say "my career's gone". He took that statement back, but these were not the words or outlook of the champion he once was.

It's my view that this quarter, and indeed this half, see great value as a result. Anderson's price looks about right, so when it comes to this market I'm plumping for Robbie at 22/1 and (though I won't clog up BK with a similar tip) Jelle Klaasen at 125/1.

Thornton won the World Grand Prix just 2 months ago, and is one of just three men who presently hold a major (along with Anderson and MVG). On his day, he can batter in a 105 average and take the game to anyone in the world. 22/1 is too long.
