PDC World Championship To win quarter 4 Jelle Klaasen

Darts - PDC World Championship - 21 Dec 19:00

Jelle Klaasen is a former BDO world champion, and has had an impressive season on the floor. That hasn't really translated to the big TV events, though he did reach the QF of the European Champs and the World Grand Prix.

He likes the Ally Pally stage, and came closer than anyone to toppling Gary Anderson last year.

The primary reasoning behind this tip is Klaasen's draw. He has Joe Cullen in Round 1, who has now lost his first round matches 3-0 four years in a row.

Next up is a badly out of sorts Mervyn King.

Beyond that lies Phil Taylor - who is the primary reason we get these odds, and why Klaasen is 150/1 outright. In years gone by, I'd steer well clear on this basis. BUT.....

Taylor gave a frankly bizarre interview after his first round win over Ono. He looked either exhausted, confused or (a rogue might suggest), under the influence. He rambled, fairly aggressively, and dismissed his own chances of victory, gesturing at cardboard cutouts of Anderson and van Gerwen, saying "one of these two are gonna be world champion". Taylor went on to say "tonight was mediocre" and "it was rubbish". He revealed that his new darts were on his mind, and that he had changed them just ONE DAY before his first round match. Among his rambling, Taylor said "I've not slept for 3 or 4 days" and went on to say "my career's gone". He took that statement back, but these were not the words or outlook of the champion he once was.

If Taylor can beat Kevin Painter, I'm backing Klaasen to get past him in style, and then, with a likely meeting with either Thornton or Jenkins the last hurdle, to finally make a long overdue impact on the PDC.

There's value in opposing Taylor in this quarter, and, while Thornton (15/2) and Norris (40/1) both look value too, I'm hoping I've plumped for the right candidate.
