To be eliminated after week 9 Gary Anderson

Darts - PDC Premier League - 04 Feb 19:00

There's value here - anything can happen over this short format. Gary is a brilliant player, a deserving champ, but can be a slow starter. In a race to 7, that can mean often mean defeat before you really get into gear.

Looking back, Anderson won this tournament in 2011, having always been a fine player, but his inconsistency then saw him come *last* in both the 2012 and 2013 Premier Leagues.

Prior to winning the worlds, Anderson hadn't won a major trophy since last year's PL/Worlds double.

My primary driver in placing this bet is motivation. Anderson is now a 2 time, back-to-back World Champion. He's proven himself beyond all doubt, and I think that will see a lull in his eagerness at the oche. He's the first to admit that he's not a good or dedicated practicer, and even in his acceptance speeches he was keen to shine a light on Michael Smith and two of his other protoges rather thank talk himself up. "I'm an old man now" has become something of a catchphrase.

Anderson's family is clearly his main priority now, and that, coupled with the media commitments of being world champ, will see his oche time suffer.

Except possibly RVB, every other player here will have a greater appetite to impress than Anderson. MVG is hurt, and is almost certain to bounce back and win the league stage. Taylor has to put in a good showing to save his career. Smith in his first ever PL and wants to make a serious impact. Wright, Lewis, Wade, Chisnall - all will see Taylor's powers fading and want to cement a place in the world's top three or four. Thornton was stung by his omission last year, and is determined to show he deserves to be here. If Anderson loses, he will shrug - he is World Champion and has achieved all he needs to.

This bet's 50/1 for a reason, but it's happened in 2 of the last 5 seasons, including the other occasion where Gary was reigning champ - and personally I think the true price is more like 6/1, therefore I am going in.
