India Top 1st Innings Bowler: Shami V Sri Lanka

Cricket - 2nd Test - 24 Nov 04:00

The first test at Eden Gardens was an incredible view for anyone who has watched any amount of cricket in India before with one of the greenest and seam friendly conditions you could ever see anywhere, let alone India and an astonishing just 2 wickets out of 35 falling to spin.

India are near unbeatable at home in these slow and big spinning wickets - but have never been able to get close to their home success away from home. The reasoning behind preparing the Green top in the first test is to try and replicate conditions for when they travel to South Africa and will encounter similar playing conditions.

The second test at Nagpur is reportedly going to have the match start in similar conditions, there is however a caveat as the weather is meant to be very sunny and dry (as opposed to rain and cloud in the first test) and as such the theory is that the pitch will help the quicks early in the match, before the wicket drys out and becomes quite flat and good to bat on before breaking up in the last few days to assist the spinners.

All of which could make the favourites in this market very dependent on which team bats first. Again the bookmakers have gone for the spinners as hot favourites with Ashwin as low as 3.0 and Jadeja 3.5, and if India bat first and bat very well - as they usually do and start bowling at Sri Lanka say late on day 2 the wicket could have the sting taken out of it and normal service resumed with spin to the fore.

The flip being Sri Lanka bat 1st in green seaming conditions and quick bowlers could scythe through an inexperienced batting line up and take the market away from spin which could well end up not being needed which was exactly what happened in game 1.

With this in mind and the prices being offered, I am going for a quick again in Mohammed Shami who shared this market in the last test. Another contributing factor in this is the other high calibre fast bowler India posses (who shared the spoils with Shami) - Bhuvi Kumar is missing the game as he is getting married and really leaves the door open for Shami if he gets the conditions that favour him.

Bookmakers at 6s and 7s as to how to price this with him being as low as 3.75 with other firms
