Juan Heraldez v Jose Miguel Borrego

Boxing - Welterweight - 26 Aug 23:00

So it's the big Mayweather v McGregor weekend at long last. Spoiler Alert - Mayweather wins the big event. I've decided to tip on a fight that's on the other end of the well known fighters spectrum. I was researching the fight last night and I struggled to explain the odds. Heraldez was a 2.75 underdog. The fact Borrego has fought the better opposition and is on an 11 fight ko streak was all I could come up with for why bookies have made him the favourite.

In his last fight he stepped up to fight Kevin Watts, who was coming off a ko loss to Eddie Ramirez. Watts was comprehensively out boxing Borrego until the 4th round when he was floored. He got back up, but the resulting onslaught from Borrego caused the referee to jump in. I think the chin of Watts will forever be his weakness. Borrego is a tough, strong Mexican with heavy hands.

Now there are many good fighters that start slow, get out boxed, before eventually catching up to their man. I'm aware of that. The thing is, if you look back before the Watts fight, Borrego knocked out a guy called John Delperdang in the 7th of a scheduled 8 rounder. By all accounts it was expected to be an easy fight however, he was down by scores of 6, 6 and 4 when the fight was called off. A fighter can only pull a ko out of his hat so many times before he inevitably takes an L. He reminds me of Omar Figuero in many ways. He's strong, he's powerful and he won't stop coming forward. If I were Heraldez I wouldn't even think about a ko as Borrego appears to be as solid as they come.

Borrego only just turned 19 this year. Heraldez is 27.

Heraldez is part of TMT and lives in Vegas, so this will be a home fight for him. He's been a sparring partner for Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez. I can certainly see some Mayweather traits in his fighting style. He's fast, accurate and has something of a shoulder roll. There's a lot to like. He's 12-0 (8 ko's), whereas Borrego is 13-0 (12 ko's). It's scheduled for 10 rounds.

If Heraldez can stay away from a big shot I can see him out boxing Borrego and winning a 10 round decision. It's all about the difference in speed and Heraldez needs to make that a major factor in the fight. Borrego could be a bit of a killer and we're basically betting against him scoring his 12th ko in a row.
