Ricky Burns points v Julius Indongo

Boxing - Super Lightweight - 15 Apr 23:00

Ricky Burns is taking less money to face Julius Indongo in Glasgow to unify the 140lb titles, instead of facing other easier opponents for more money. It goes some way towards showing you what a throw back warrior Burns is. Indongo has developed a fearsome reputation since he sparked unbeaten Troyanovsky out in 1 round in Russia in his last fight.

It was a devastating ko, make no mistake. Is it something he's likely to land again against Burns? No, it's not. It was a bit of a freak if you ask me. Troyanovsky stuck his chin out, closed his eyes and begged Indongo to hit it. It had all the force Indongo could muster as he was allowed to pull back as far as he could before unleashing the shot.

Indongo is not actually a fearsome puncher. He has 11 ko's in his 21-0 record and went the full 12 in 3 of his last 6. Granted he's won the last 3 by stoppage. At 5'10.5 he usually enjoys a big height advantage over his opponents, which he won't against 5'10 Burns. He tends to paw with or flick out his jab instead of firing it out with authority. I think burns will look to jab with him, hitting the target enough that it'll make Indongo tentative to throw. Indongo is a southpaw and he wants nothing more than to unleash the straight left. In fact, he has very little else going for him besides the 1-2 jab, left hand. If Burns keeps an eye out for that shot and keeps his right hand up, which he always does, he should be safe.

Before going to Russia Indongo had fought exclusively in Namibia against fairly poor opposition. He's 34 years old. I believe winning the title was his career highlight and his reign as champion will end in Scotland.

In 47 fights Burns has never been stopped. He also only has 14 ko's to his name, which is why I favour a points victory. I certainly wouldn't rule out a ko victory as Burns has 3 ko's in his last 4 contests. I just feel it'll be a boxing contest as opposed to any slug fest. The fight will take place in Glasgow, Scotland. Burns has only ever lost in Scotland to p4p rated Crawford, Zlaticanin and fellow Scot, Alex Arthur.
