David Lemieux DNB v Billy Joe Saunders

Boxing - Middleweight - 17 Dec 03:00

Lemieux is the underdog in Quebec against Billy Joe Saunders? Not for me he isn't.

Saunders comes back from a career worst performance against Akavov (who?) to beat the gun shy Willie Munroe and now he's going to box rings around Lemieux in Canada?

First off, Saunders will be fighting away from home and nobody knows how he will react to that. Sure, he'll claim he's fought all over the world as an amateur, but it won't be the same. Lemieux is adored in Canada and will have a rapturous crowd behind him. If it's a close fight I expect Lemieux to get the nod.

The puncher in the contest is also very much Lemiuex. He is legitimately heavy handed. Saunders would actually be described as a light puncher at world level. I rule out a ko win for Saunders. Lemieux has improved a lot in recent years. Although he was dominated by Golovkin, where the fight took place in New York, he has barely lost a round in his 4 subsequent fights. Losing badly to Golovkin isn't much of a black mark anyway.

I believe Saunders would need to clearly win 8 of the 12 rounds and avoid a knockdown to get a decision in Canada. Against Munroe 1 judge had him winning by 1 round. I personally saw it wider than that. Munroe really disappointed me as he looked far too tentative and appeared happy to coast to a decision loss. I believe Saunders got into his head prior to the fight.

When Saunders won the title against Andy Lee, although he dropped Lee early, he only won a majority decision. I remember he tired near the end and allowed Lee to close the gap. He won a debatable split decision against Chris Eubank Jr. Most people are in agreement that Eubank would gain revenge should they ever rematch. Saunders also beat John Ryder by a narrow unanimous decision. He keeps winning, but my point is that he wouldn't get away with sneaking a narrow points win over Lemieux in Canada.

Most bookies have this fight as dead even or Saunders as a narrow favourite. Lemieux at 1.91 with Ladbrokes makes more sense to me. 2.1 with stakes returned should we see a draw is great value for me. I expect the odds to drop closer to fight night. If you back this, just ensure you choose the 2-way option in Marathon.
