Izuagbe Ogonoh v Dominic Breazeale

Boxing - Heavyweight - 26 Feb 01:00

Izuagbe Ogonoh comes into this one with a record of 17-0 (14 ko’s) and even at 30 years old looks to be a fighter that’s going places. He’s 6’5, weighing around 230lbs, without an ounce of fat in him. It makes a pleasant change from the lumbering, overweight, leaning heavyweights that litter the heavyweight division of the modern day.
That brings me onto Dominic Breazeale, who brings a record of 17-1 (15 ko’s). I have very little time for fighters like Breazeale. He never whips himself into the best possible shape and his skills are severely lacking.
He will receive plaudits for going 7 rounds with Anthony Joshua, proving he has heart and a chin however, the fact remains that he was dominated from start to finish. He was slow, couldn’t land his shots and couldn’t avoid many. Has the beating he took that day dented his confidence and possibly his chin?

Izu is very athletic for such a big man and is constantly on the move, throwing a fast jab and banging the body when he gets in close. He’s not shown any signs of fragility that I know of and won’t be over awed by such a big opponent. He’s fought big, tall guys already in his career, namely against the 7’1 Julius Long. Breazeale is a better fighter than Long, but it’s decent preparation.
I see Izu boxing circles around Breazeale, racking up points with speed and work rate. Breazeale will swing and miss for most of the night. I expect the fight to go into the later rounds and possibly to the scorecards. Bodyshots could be key if Izu can get inside often.

What stands out for me is that the 44-year-old, 6’1 Amir Mansoor gave Breazeale hell for 5 rounds before quitting on his stool, claiming he’d badly bitten his tongue. Breazeale was knocked down badly and appeared hurt in the 3rd. He couldn’t cope with the speed. That doesn’t bode well with what the much faster Izu will bring.
